The pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. It’s also known as the pneumonia vaccine.
Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia (a kind of blood poisoning) and meningitis.

Pneumonia Immunisations are offered to all patients who are either 65 years of age or over, live in long term residential nursing care, have on going chronic health problems or are a carer. Immunisations are usually given during October and November. If you are housebound arrangements can be made for the district nurse to give these at home.
